PF govt fails to pay UNZA students allowances, riots break out

12647395_1085126931538056_2770983637124012899_nStudents at the University of Zambia this (Friday) evening rioted over the PF government’s failure to pay them  meal,  accommodation and other allowances for this term.

Students at UNZA have now joined their counterparts at the Copperbelt University in Kitwe who have not been paid similar allowances from last year. The students were upset after being told that there is no money for them and the accountants could not even give an idea of when they money would be available.

Meanwhile, Police are planning to raid the University of Zambia Great East road campus in the middle of tonight in a bid to arrest some students who have been singled out as ring leaders of this evening’s demonstration which disturbed traffic.

A Police source has disclosed that some students perceived to be agents of the opposition have been singled out as ring leaders and will be pounced on in a midnight raid.

The protesting students blocked Great East road with stones and burnt tyres after police refused them permission to stage a peaceful demonstration, according to the application made about ten days ago.

Though no arrests have been reported, police have kept vigil at the institution of higher learning.
