OPPOSITION UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema this morning escaped unhurt after a group of suspected PF cadres pounced on him and his officials shortly after he attended the body viewing service of the late Princess Nakatindi Wina at the Cathedral.
The slogan chanting PF cadres charged at Hichilema as he made his way to his vehicle. Although one the cadres managed to pull him by his jacket, Hichilema was quickly whisked away by his party officials. Although he was asked to get into his car immediately, Hichilema who was very furious refused. Hichilema only jumped on to his car after exchanging words with the cadres.
Hichilema told the cadres that he was saddened by their hooliganism. He said the thought PF cadres had changed now that were in power. He urged them to behave themselves especially at a time like now when the nation was mourning the Princess.
But the cadres responded by hurling insults at Hichilema and his officials.
As this was happening, some police officers were just watching, a situation which angered some UPND officials who reacted by showering insults at the officers. A near punch up between PF candles and a handful of UPND cadres then nearly ensued.
When the situation was nearly getting out of hand, police officers finally came to quell the situation. But unconfirmed reports indicate that UPND Mazabuka MP Garry Nkhombo a few minutes later roughed up some officers for failing to control the situation. The report further indicates that Nkhombo was temporarily locked up after the incident.
