The PF Government through its cadre Director of Central Statistical Office John Kalumbi is trying to hide the poverty rate from Zambians which shows that Zambians have become poorer than they were before.
The Central Statistics Office conducted a Living Conditions Monitoring Survey in 2015 which was aimed at validating progress made in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The results of the Survey has shown that the poverty levels have not declined in the country since the Patriotic Front Party took over the Governing of the Country.
The PF cadre Director of CSO and his PF cadre assistant Director of Economic statistics a Mr. Goodson Sinyenga have doctored the results so that they portrays that poverty has declined when in actual sense it has increased. The World Bank even told Central Statistical Offices to present the Correct figures than the ones which CSO wants to make the country believe are the correct ones. In 2010, the poverty rate in the country was at 60.5 percent. The CSO wants to give the public a figure less than 60.5 percent to make the people think that the PF Government is working. Meanwhile World Bank calculated the same poverty figure and found that Poverty was much higher than what CSO wants to present to the people. In rural areas the poverty prevalence rate has even worsened further than what it has always been. The poverty rate in rural areas has even increased to more than 80 percent. This has worried the CSO PF cadre Director and the incompetent Minister of Finance who together wants to hide the results from the mases in fear of losing the August 2016 elections.
The Indaba Agriculture Policy Research Institute (IAPRI) a USAID sponsored NGO conducted a separate survey of their own and found that the poverty rate in the country have increased drastically. The IAPRI report shows that Eastern Province has become the poorest province in the country overtaking Western Province. The report can be accessed here
The CSO LCMS of 2015 also shows that nutritional levels have become worse in the country. This means that our children are now more malnourished while some are born with high levels of malnutrition inherited from their mothers. Malnutrition is even now affecting elderly people like some of the ministers you will see in Lungu’s Government. Despite a protracted campaign by many NGOs like CSO-SUN aimed at sensitizing the public on high levels of nutrition and on ways of reducing malnutrition, the public seem not to be able to reduce malnutrition due to high levels of poverty.
In order to hide the results the cadre Director together with the underperforming minister of Finance Alexander Chikwanda have taken the report to cabinet and wants cabinet to Doctor it more during its cabinet meetings. This is unusual since their have never been a report produced by CSO which has ever been taken to cabinet for it to be released. CSO poverty results are released just there at CSO without even taking them to Cabinet for discussions just like they release the inflation figure except in few cases where they hold dissemination workshops and not cabinet. Cab memos were drawn and the report is waiting for Cabinet’s approval and further doctoring. It is doubtful if at all they will discuss it since they do not want to have the results released until after elections.
