A Happy God
Religion Minister, Reverend Sumaili, says a vote for PF is a vote for Jesus. That Jesus is in the PF boat. After initially raising my eyebrow at the seeming arrogance of that statement, it struck me that this was not just campaign platform hyperbole. It hit me that the EL Administration, and a good section of the Zambian church, genuinely believes that God is very pleased with the PF, in its current formation. They are convinced that they have managed to make God so happy that he now wears a “powered by EL” Tshirt. You see, EL and his people have given God a National Day of Prayer, a Religious Ministry and are even building Him an astronomically expensive House. They therefore, in their collective mind’s eye, see Jehovah God sitting in heaven looking down on them with a satisfied smile. So pacified with their gifts to him is the Almighty that He does not notice the ways of this government. In their view, God just looks at his House of Prayer coming up on a destroyed forest reserve and his extreme pleasure with it makes the rampant theft, lawlessness, tribalism, violence and neglect of the poor, that are a defining characteristic of this government, a small thing. There are certain that there will be no consequences for the things they do that would ordinarily upset the God of justice. The rules are different for them, you see because, well, God is so excited that He has a whole country that terms itself Christian. It is simple really – just like the PF can get a poor, hungry Zambian to vote for them with a simple offering of a Tshirt and chitenge, EL and his people are sure they have God in their back pocket via some shiny gifts.
