The Grand Coalition on the constitution has dismissed as misplaced government claims that the constitution making process has been hijacked.
President Michael Sata had recently stated that the current constitution-making process has been hijacked by individuals whose objective is to embarrass, humiliate and politically undermine the sovereign will of the masses.
But the Grand Coalition has wondered how one individual can securely guarantee the safety of a national document, such as the constitution, on behalf of the majority.
Speaking at media briefing in Lusaka today on behalf of the Coalition which consists among others the civil society, student movement and activists, ActionAid Executive Director, Pamela Chisanga says her coalition is of the view that the move by the government is an astonishing and strange idea aimed at finally repudiating a people driven constitution making process.
Ms. Chisanga says such unwarranted act is also tempting the public to see this alleged pretext as yet another imposition of a distorted version of the people’s wish by the ruling Patriotic Front (PF).
And Ms. Chisanga says in view of the fact that the ruling PF has allegedly seen nothing wrong with its failure to conclude the constitutional making process in 90 days, her Coalition demands, among other things, that Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba immediately releases the road map for the finalization of the constitution which should include the holding of a referendum.
