Home affairs minister Davies Mwila and his PF have resolved to deploy more police officers to hunt down and brutalise the residents who rioted last week following the beating to death of a suspect by a police officer. The deployment reinforces the others earlier sent in from Mongu.
A senior police officer based at headquarters has disclosed that about 500 police officers from Kamfinsa and other stations will be deployed in the small rural town of Lukulu with directives to arrest and beat any suspects of the riots.
The source said that the deployment is against the intelligence suggestion against the idea, to avoid a repeat of the occurrences under Rupiah Banda and later under late President Michael Sata when many local people were shot, wounded and killed for advocating for the restoration of The Barotse agreement. Some were even sent to jail for trumped up charges while four others are waiting to be sentenced for treason in March.
The decision to send the armed brutal officers has received the blessings of President Edgar Lungu, who as home affairs minister also sanctioned another battalion of armed paramilitary police men to block the Chitimukulu Kanyanta Sosala from taking his throne.
