The PF Government is planning to close The University of Zambia in a bid to avoid paying the lecturers and retirees their outstanding dues, says the FDD. And the FDD says president Lungu is not serious as he can decide to go to the zoo and watch hippos while failing to attend to serious issues.
In a press statement, FDD Spokesperson Antonio Mwanza said ‘the PF Government is broke. There is no money to clear the outstanding bills at UNZA. The Government’s strategy is to let the situation at UNZA degenerate into chaos.’
Mwanza said the government wants students to take to the streets and riot. ‘Once that happens, Government will close the institution, citing violence.’
‘We urge all the students to remain resolute and vigilant and not to fall into the trap the PF Government has laid for them,’ Mwanza said.
Mwanza said UNZASU should keep the student body abreast about any latest developments with regards to the Lecturers’ strike and should widely consult the student body on the way forward.
Mwanza said ‘President Edgar Lungu is not serious. He has time to go to the zoo to watch hippos but he has no time to attend to the problems at UNZA.’
FDD urged Government to stop playing with people’s lives and resolve the industrial unrest at UNZA. He said UNZA is a public institution and it is Government’s responsibility to finance its operations.
He said the perennial problems at UNZA are as a result of Government’s failure to understand that education is the only potent bludgeon any nation can use to eradicate poverty and unleash people’s potential to achieve economic opulence.
