Paramilitary police in Livingstone picked up UPND Mayor Agrrey Njekwa around 02: 00 hours this morning. Mayor Njekwa is one of the two persons who signed court bail for UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema yesterday.
Hichilema is charged with proposing (general) violence but his charge is not linked to the death of the so called PF cadre who some PF officials says is a young man (youth chairman) while others say he is above 50 and left an equally old widow.
The Statement of offence against Hichilema as submitted by Charity Katanga in court is that on February 25, 2013 in Livingstone, Hichilema issued a statement on Radio Zambezi Fm which was meant to compute or stimulate his supporters to act in a manner which can result into violence.
United Party for National Development (UPND) deputy spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa confirmed that Njekwa was picked up at the dawn of he night and the police are refusing to tell his lawyers what offence he has committed.
The police have since bundled Njekwa in a van and driven him to Lusaka. They claimed that the offence he committed can only be handled by Lusaka police and that the Livingstone police were only required to apprehend him.
Mweetwa complained that the behavior of the police to pick up people at midnight is bad. He wondered why a well known person like Njekwa could be picked up at night when the police could have easily gone to his office or house during the day and ask him to accompany them.
He said the era where people are disappearing at night has come back.
