Zambian soldiers and Police continue arresting and making Barotse activists disappear

barotselandZambian security forces  in Barotseland have continued picking up people suspected to be secessions and detaining them without announcing.

In the past two week a number of people in Lukulu district have been picked up by police and detained in unknown locations.

Around Chritmas, three persons were arrested in Lukulu on suspicion of Barotse Activism. The picking up of the three seems connected to the clandestine army announced by the president Michael Sata, which according to him were assembled in Lukulu district.

It is believed the the people who were picked from Lukulu were taken t to Mongu, taken back to Lukulu and then taken back to Mongu.

On Wednesday 2nd January, 2013 another series of arrests were made in Mongu according to some sources.

One eye witness narrated that he saw about eight (8) Police Land Crusers speeding to the residence of a Mr Malamo, proprietor of Studio Sakata in Mongu, packed with armed security personnel both in plain clothes and uniform who theatrically jumped out of the vans upon arriving at the premises and sealed it off while others dashed into the house and immediately mounted a search. It is unclear if they had or showed any search warrant. After the search they headed for the studio Sakata where Mr. Malamo was found and apprehended. In the process the security officers collected a number of things including documents, CDs and computers. It is believed a Mr. Mubita Silumesii was also arrested in similar fashion.

The team also went for a Mr. Ikachana who is the leader of the Linyungandambo youth wing but did not find him at home. They claim that they found Barotseland flags being manufactured at the home and decided to pick the wife. Other activists or nationalists (as they prefer to be called) mainly of Linyungandambo have been picked.

Another person is believed to have been picked from Sesheke. According to police source speaking on condition of anonymity, the person from Sesheke might have been framed up by a colleague believed to be a former commando who left a bag with him that contained a recruitment list of ex security personnel into the mysterious Barotse Liberation Army and then informed the police to go and arrest him. Some Linyungandambo member who went to Mongu central police station to check on the Sesheke colleague were informed that he has been transferred to Lusaka.

Meanwhile it is unclear if Mr. Afumba Mombotwa the Linyungandambo leader who has always eluded the Zambian Security forces has also been picked or is on the run. Some reports indicate that he was picked in Lusaka after Police missed him at his Limulunga home and were informed that he is in Lusaka. The other report seems to indicate that the Linyungandambo leader was already on the way to Mongu when the Police were looking for him. On a tip-off from colleagues in Mongu he decided to disembark the bus at an unknown station before Mongu and disappeared in thin air.
