Police pick up editor Richard Sakala and FODEP boss

Police in Lusaka have picked up Daily Nation Newspaper editor Richard Sakala and Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) director Macdonald Chipenzi.

The two are being questioned for revealing that the Zambia Police is secretly recruiting police officers instead of the normal procedure of allowing qualified members of the public to apply.

The Daily Nation first revealed the secret operation last week but the police just ignored it. Today the Watchdog reproduced the same article on both its main website and Facebook page and the police swung into action.

Chipenzi, who commented on the article by condemning the secret recruitment, was picked up at 11 hours this morning. Daily nation Editor Sakala was picked up around 13 hours. By 16;30 local time, they were being taken to police headquarters from other police stations.
