More than 20 heavily armed Zambia Police officers had by 08 hours Tuesday morning surrounded opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema’s Kabulonga residence following president Edgar Lungu’s directive to arrest him.
Another huge number of police officers were at the UPND Party Secretariat Headquarters in Rhodes by the same time.
The police want to search Mr. Hichilema’s Kabulonga residence and arrest him as directed by Edgar Lungu on Monday.
This is in connection with the story run in Richard Sakala’s Daily Nation newspaper that Mr. Hichilema receives intelligence reports even before Lungu.
And highly placed State House sources have disclosed that they went to Daily Nation yesterday to question the reporter who wrote the story.
But the reporter is said to have disowned the story as having been mere additions by the owner Richard Sakala as Mr. Hichilema did not categorically refer to the Zambia State Security and Intelligence Services popularly known as Office of the President (OP).
Sources revealed that Mr. Hichilema merely referred to receiving intelligence in general.
“It clear this is a clear Robert Mugabe scheme to silence the critical opposition in the country. Lungu won by barely one percent of the vote against Mr. Hichilema and is now determined to silence him through brutality” revealed a source.
Two weeks ago, Lungu told Misisi residents that he would not be directing the police on who to arrest, but yesterday he did exactly the same.
