Policeman charged with treason over Barotseland

A Lusaka Police officer has been charged with treason for allegedly agitating for the secession of Western Province.

Maybin Mubita Sikwa of House Number 156 Chelston Police camp was arrested on 16th January, 2011.

Mr. Sikwa while acting together with other unknown persons is between October 23rd 2010 and January 12, 2011 in Senanga,Western Province, endevoured to secede Western Province from the rest of Zambia, by force.

Lusaka Principal Resident Magistrate, Sharon Newa read out the treason charge Tuesday Morning.

Magistrate Newa told Mr. Sikwa 54 that his treasonable offence is triable by the High Court.

Magistrate Newa stated that Mr. Sikwa will be committed to the High Court upon instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions-DPP, according to ZNBC

She stated that Mr. Sikwa will continue to appear before her court pending instructions from the DPP.

Mr. Sikwa is on 31st January expected to appear before the magistrate court for another mention and is currently in custody.

Treason is an offence contrary to section 43 of the Laws of Zambia.

Recently Home Affairs Minister Mkhondo Lungu cautioned that anybody agitating for the secession of western province will be cited for treason.
