Poor security, K95 million stolen from Finance Bank

K95 million in old currency notes has been stolen from Serenje’s finance bank branch fater thieves broke into the bank in the early hours of today. Residents have called for intensified security at one of Zambia’s largest banks and owned by businessman Rajan Mathani.

According to a statement made available in Lusaka today by Police Public Relations Officer, Elizabeth Kanjela, the criminals climbed over the wall fence and went to the strong room where they blew up the safe containing the money.

Kanjela has since appealed to banks and members of the public to be cautious and report to the nearest police station anyone trying to exchange huge sums of old currency into the rebased notes.

Somemebers of the community spoken to have complained of poor security at the bank and are scared that more robberies may occur.
“It is a bad timing I believe people thought the money for teachers and other civil servants was in, we are lucky the amount stolen is not so huge,” said a local businessman in a phone interview.
