This is not a rally: it’s poor, unpaid peasant farmers in Chinsali. They gathered at Finance bank to demand payment for last season’ transactions with the PF regime. This time around, these hardworking members of the productive agriculture sector were supposed to be in the field not queueing for small amounts of money in town. And, under a government that values agriculture, such payments would be modernised such that farmers are paid in their bank accounts thereby saving time. After going through such huddles to be paid, can they be motivated to plant again next year or would they rather start travelling to Tanzania, South Africa etc to buy second hand clothes thereby abandoning one of the country’s most important industry. Can this behaviour by the PF encourage young people to go into farming, is there profit?
