Pregnant Zambian woman arrested in Mozambique for drugs

A 32 year old Zambian woman has been arrested in Mozambique for cocaine trafficking.

Melekani Malwini Mulimine, who is also five months pregnant, was arrested at the Maputo Airport with 500 grams of cocaine upon her arrival from India concealed in her suite case.

DEC spokesperson John Nyawali revealed that Mulimine was arrested together with a Mr. Martin Adu who was waiting for her at the airport and is believed to be the owner of the contraband.

‘Investigations have shown that she was recruited by her Zambian friend who is based in South Africa and is part of a cartel that is recruiting unsuspecting women to courier drugs on their behalf’, said Nyawali.

He said Mulimine risks a jail sentence of 20 years if convicted.

The two are remanded at Ndlavela Prison in Maputo after appearing in court for mention as trial is expected to commence soon.

Nyawali said the DEC is saddened with the increasing number of women getting arrested for drug trafficking and would like to appeal to the private sector to help in sensitising the public particularly women on the dangers of drug trafficking.
