President Rupiah Banda has congratulated the Zambia National Soccer Team for their performance in the Confederation of Southern African Football Association (COSAFA) Senior challenge Cup finals played yesterday.
And President Banda has urged the Chipolopolo Boys to remain resilient in their next assignment in Kigali, Rwanda this month.
This is the team’s last encounter of the joint World and Africa Cup qualifier.
Mr. Banda who watched the match on television said he was happy with the performance of the Team even though they lost to host – neigbouring Zimbabwe.
In a press statement released by his Special Assistant for Press and Public Relations, Dickson Jere, President Banda said Zambia played very good football in the finals although the team failed to convert the many chances into goals.
President Banda, who has taken a leading role in rising funds for the team said he will continue supporting the Chipolopolo Boys.
He appealed to the Team to focus on the next game with Rwanda so that they qualify to the 2010 Africa Cup.
“On behalf of government and the people of Zambia, I wish to extend my heartfelt congratulations on the well deserved qualification to the finals of the COSAFA. We area indeed proud of your achievements so far,” President Banda said in a letter to the Team.
Zambia lost 3 – 1 to Zimbabwe on Sunday in a match played at Rufaro Stadium in Harare.
This is the fourth time Zimbabwe has won the COSAFA Senior Cup challenge.
Zambia beat Malawi and Mozambique to book a place in the final encounter.
Zambia won the COSAFA Cup in 1997, 1998 and in 2004.
