LUSAKA, October 22, 2010 – His Excellency, Mr. Rupiah Banda, President of the Republic of Zambia is on Saturday expected to join his counterpart, His Excellency, Ngwazi Professor Bingu wa Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi at the official opening of the Nsanje World Inland Port in Southern Malawi.
The President has been invited by President wa Mutharika to join him at the launch of the Nsanje World Inland Port, which will provide a cheaper trade route to the Indian Ocean for imports and exports from countries including Zambia. The Port forms part of the Shire-Zambezi Waterways project.
“This project is an added asset to the sub-region because it will contribute to the attraction of foreign direct investments,” President Banda said ahead of the event.
President Banda and President wa Mutharika agreed to jointly launch the Inland Port, whose route will eventually be connected to the Chipata-Mchinji Railway Line, which the two leaders recently commissioned in Zambia’s Eastern Province.
President Banda and his delegation will fly to Malawi’s city of Blantyre from Mbala’s Samora Machel Base in Northern Province. President Banda and his delegation are expected to return to Zambia the same day.
