Over 100 UPND and the Patriotic Front Members in Monze District have defected to the ruling Movement for Multi-party Democracy.
And Monze residents today were entertained to free music and comedy during President Rupiah Banda’s campaign rally in the district.
Drumming up support for MMD aspiring candidates in Monze district, President Banda said the MMD was the only viable political party which has delivered on its promises.
President Banda said this after receiving defectors from the opposition UPND and the PF.
President Banda told the MMD leadership not to let go off the defectors but to embrace them as they were now part and parcel of theMMD.
“The ruling MMD is the only viable political party which has a vision, I did not expect a huge number to defect especially from the Southern province but am happy that people here also have joined efforts to
support the working government of President Rupiah Banda,” he said.
He said the defection of over 100 people was a sign of confidence the people of Southern province and Zambia at large have in President Banda’s government and leadership.
President Banda boasted saying his government has delivered unprecedented developments in the past three years he’s been head of state, a scenario he said was very impossible to be achieved in a
short period of time.
He said development was a process which has also affected the province, adding that projects worth billions of Kwacha were currently undertaking place in the province.
President Banda asked the Tonga speaking people not to work in isolation.
“You can also produce a president but we have to work together in order to achieve that, am happy to be here and I can see that you are also supporting my government,” he said as his speech was interrupted
by musicians namely Daritso, Oga Family, Indi K, JK and Difikoti.
President Banda said the forthcoming general elections should not separate the people of Zambia but be a turning point of unity among the people, adding that people should despise all those promoting
violence.
President Banda also warned the people of Southern province not to believe and trust political failures who cannot point at any achievement the time they were in government.
“Be wary of some people who are coming here to talk about what they want to do, asked them what did they do when they were in government by then, why did they fail? I am here to point at so many
developmental projects this government has done for you people, we have built schools, clinics, roads and we have bought maize and even this year we shall give out inputs to more farmers and actually am
told that the inputs are already in,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors former UPND district chairman Bbongo Namitondo said the MMD under President Banda was the only political party that can deliver development to the people of Zambia.
Namitondo said it was high time the people of Southern province worked with the government of the day in order to benefit from government programmes.
He said the opposition has no direction and cannot deliver development because it had no mandate to do so from the people.
And Monze came to a standstill when people visited President Banda’ site of campaign where they were entertained by Zambian musicians.
It was a free for all show as musicians were strategically put to hold on to the people at the rally.
President Banda was drumming up support for Monze Central aspiring candidate Dr. Victor Mukonka, Tsibu Bbuku for Bweengwa and Isabel Nanja for Moomba constituencies respectively.

But MMD southern province chairperson Edgar Keembe’s brothers, shown in the pictuter,  are busy campaigning for UPND in the villages.
