Zambia – Life on the border – Weeping in a Pentecostal church

Prayer warriors at work

26 Oct 2008, Chirundu, Zimbabwe — A member of the congregation weeps, having a powerful emotional response to prayer at the Bread of Life Church in Chirundu. This small settlement on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe is a key transit point on the the Great North trucking route from South Africa through to East Africa and it has become notorious for its congestion as every day hundreds of trucks try to pass through the nearby border. It is estimated that there are more than 350 sex workers based in Chirundu who provide services to truck drivers and others and the area is known as a HIV/AIDS transmission hotspot. However normal life continues for local residents for many of whom the church plays a central role in their lives. The Christian church and Christian morality is a powerful force in Zambian society. — Image by © Gideon Mendel/Corbis
