Queen Elizabeth mourns Betty Kaunda

Message of condolences from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth has paid tribute to the late former First Lady Betty Kaunda for her commitment in serving the country.

Queen Elizabeth said this in a message of condolence sent to the First President, Dr Kenneth Kaunda.

In her message the Queen said;

“It is with great sadness that I learnt of the death of your wife, Betty Kaunda, who played a key role in the development of your country.

On behalf of the people of the United Kingdom, Prince Philip and I wish to convey to your family and to the people of the Republic of Zambia our deepest sympathy at this sad time.  The Princess Royal, Princess Anne, who will be visiting Zambia next week, also sends her deepest condolences.”  Elizabeth R

And British High Commissioner to Zambia James Thornton has also sent his condolences to Dr Kaunda and the people of Zambia.

In his message the High Commissioner said;

“I never had the fortune to meet Mama Betty Kaunda.  But it is clear that she was a woman of exemplary kindness and character.  The whole of Zambia is the poorer today without her in our midst.  I send my condolences and deepest sympathies to the First President, to his family, and to all the people of Zambia.”
