Staff at radio Mano in Kasama have gone on an indefinite work boycott demanding for the removal of the board members. Workers accuse board members of financial abuse and victimisation in the ongoing fight between two PF aspirants for Kasama central constituency, Emmanuel Mwamba and Kelvin Sampa.
Under the current boycott, the community radio station is operating from 08:00hrs to 18:00hrs. Workers say the current board has no mandate to run the affairs of the station because their tenure expired in October last year but have just been imposed by the PF.
Meanwhile, some workers have told the Watchdog that the problems at the station have been caused by Mwamba and Sampa, the two candidates aspiring to stand on PF ticket in kasama central 2016 elections. Mwamba has the support of the board while Sampa has the support of the workers.
In spite of campaigns not yet having started, both contenders have already launched full-fledged campaigns, setting up NGOs and making donations in the name community assistance. Mwamba’s appointment seems to have reduced his chances compared to Sampa who has since donated two vehicles, money and frequently travels to Kasama, enjoying wide coverage by the media house much to the annoyance of the board.
