President Rupiah Banda Tuesday applauded the Zambia National Soccer Team for putting up what he called ‘a very good performance’ during the Orange Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal match against Nigeria despite losing.
President, speaking through his press aide Dickson Jere, said the team put up a spirited fight against Nigeria even though they failed to score any goals in the 120 minutes of play, which included the extra time.
He observed that the Zambian team was very well coordinated and played superior football compared to their opponents.
Zambia lost 5-4 to Nigeria in the post match penalty shoot-out in the Africa Cup quarterfinal yesterday after the two teams drew in the 120 minutes of play.
“On behalf of Government and the people of Zambia and, indeed, on my own behalf, I wish to congratulate the team and the entire coaching staff for putting up a very good performance in the quarterfinal match against Nigeria,” President Banda said.
President Banda said he was certain that Zambia will be a team to reckon with in the future because it has many young talented players.
