President Rupiah Banda says government has always appreciated the advice of newly appointed Catholic Cardinal Merdado Mazombwe.
President Banda said this in his congratulatory message to Mazombwe on his appointment as Cardinal.
Banda commended the ‘resilience and consistency of Cardinal Mazombwe who was first ordained a priest in September 1960 after which he was appointed Bishop of Chipata in November 1970 and ordained in that position in February 1971.’
Mazombwe is a first Zambian to be appointed Cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church.
“I wish to wholeheartedly congratulate you for your appointment as Cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church by His Holiness Pope Benedict the XIV, which is the high position in the Church,” President Banda said in a letter to the newly appointed Cardinal.
President t Banda said Government has for years appreciated the counsel and service of the Mazombwe who in November 1996 was appointed Archbishop of Lusaka in which capacity he served the Lord Jesus Christ until October 2006 when he retired
The President said Government looks forward to a mutual relationship with the Catholic Church and wished the new Cardinal success in his line of service. He expressed confidence that the cleric’s 50-plus years of experience in ministry would serve him well in his new posting
