RB, Jintao meet amid signing of agreements

President Rupiah Banda Hu Jintao, President of China on Thursday held closed-door talks where they discussed and agreed on a number of bilateral issues focusing mainly on economic cooperation between the two countries.

President Banda met Jinato at the Great Hall of the People (GHP) Northern Wing before the two leaders witnessed the signing of various Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding between the two countries.

After the talks, President Banda, the First Lady Madam Thandiwe Banda and the Zambian Delegation went for a feast
hosted by President Jintao in honour of the visiting Zambian Head of State.

According to Dickson Jere who is in the delegation, the five main Agreements signed are:

Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of Zambia for the construction of the National Stadium in Lusaka, Zambia for a period beginning March 2010 to February 2015. This Agreement was signed by Situmbeko Musokotwane, MP, Minister of Finance and National Planning.

Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of Zambia for financial support to various developmental projects to be agreed through consultation between the two countries. This Agreement was signed by Hon. Musokotwane, MP on behalf of the Zambian Government.

Framework Agreement on Mining Comprehensive Cooperation between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of Zambia. This Agreement is on the promotion of cooperation in the field of geology and mining through cooperative projects and exchanges of information and visits on the basis of equality, mutual benefit, cooperation and win-win results. This Agreement was signed by Hon. Maxwell Mwale, MP, Minister of Mines and Minerals Development.

Executive Programme for Culture Agreement between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of Zambia for the years 2010 to 2914. This Agreement will help strength the exchanges and cooperation in Culture, Arts, Cultural Heritage, Education, Sports, Publication, Radio, Film and Television between the two countries. This Agreement was signed by Hon. Kabinga Pande, MP, and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

 Agreement relating to the collaboration in the development of Economic Zones in Zambia with the China Nonferrous Metal Mining Group Limited (CNMC). This Agreement relate to the CNMC procuring funding from China under the various lending windows for the establishment of several special economic zones in Zambia. This will include the financing and construction of the Lusaka Sub-Zone near the Lusaka International Airport at the cost of US$ 100million.This Agreement was signed by Hon. Felix Mutati, MP, Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry.

President, who is in China for a State Visit at the invitation of President Jintao, is scheduled tomorrow, February 26, 2010 to address investors at the Business Forum organized jointly by the Zambia Development Agency and the China Nonferrous Metal Mining Group (CNMC) in Beijing. After the Forum, President Banda will proceed for another high-level meeting with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his delegation.
