RB to attend burial of his UNIP colleague inChipata

PRESIDENT BANDA LEAVES FOR CHIPATA

LUSAKA, January 22, 2011 – His Excellency, Mr. Rupiah Banda, President of the Republic of Zambia, will on Sunday leave for Chipata in the Eastern Province to attend the State funeral of the late former Cabinet Minister in the UNIP government Mr Amok Israel Phiri who died in Lusaka on Wednesday.

The late Mr Phiri, who will be put to rest today, was not only President Banda’s colleague in the first Zambian President Dr Kenneth Kaunda’s government but also a personal friend.

Mr Phiri held several positions in the UNIP government, including Cabinet Minister, Minister of State and Zambia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. He also served as Member of Parliament for Katete in Eastern Province.

President Banda described Mr Phiri as a hardworking, selfless and loyal citizen whose contribution to Zambia’s economic and social growth will always occupy a unique place in the country’s historyy.

The President will be accompanied to Chipata by First Zambian President Dr Kaunda. President Banda’s delegation will return to Lusaka after the burial.
