Zambian President Rupiah Banda won’t be challenged for the leadership of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy and will be its candidate for presidential elections next year, the ruling party said.
The “internal party organs have made it clear” that Banda will be the only person running to be the party’s president at a convention in 2011, Dora Siliya, spokeswoman for the Movement for Multiparty Democracy, said today on Lusaka-based Radio Phoenix. Presidential and parliamentary elections are likely to be held before October next year.
“What we are simply saying is that we do not see any reason for experimenting with our leadership,” Siliya said. The party’s leader will automatically become its candidate in the presidential election, senior party official Moses Muteteka said by phone.
