Riots have broken out in Mazabuka following the death of a street vendor who was beaten by a police officer in Mazabuka and died this (wednesday) morning.
By 19 hours local time, police were fighting running battles with residents especially in Nakambala area. Residents are stoning vehicles indiscriminatetly and others are taking advantage top break into homes to steal.
The riots started in town around 17 hours but had by 19 hours been restricted to Nakambala. The police were firing teargas canisters from Nakambala bridge while residents fired stones and other weapons they could find.
The riots erupted after A 37 year old man of Mulonga extension in Mazabuka District died after he was allegedly beaten by a named police officer.
According to sources, Rabison Chitalu a street vender of house No 493 was beaten by a police officer yesterday around 11:00 hours in town for allegedly insulting him and died last night.
Chitalu, a businessman sustained was complaining of internal body pains especially the lower abdomen.
Accortding to Radio Mazabuka, when contacted for confirmation, Mazabuka District police officer Commanding Sera Mubanga Muyoba could not give details but quickly said police have instituted investigations into the cause of death.
By the time the news crew arrived at the hospital, the Chitalu’s remains were already deposited in Mazabuka District Hospital mortuary.
Barely a month ago, police officers tortured 35 year old Emily Manyoni, of Ndeke compound in Mazabuka District for allegedly buying a stolen radio set.
