Row erupts over new Daily Mail deputy boss

A fight is brewing at the government controlled newspaper Daily Mail following the ‘importation’ of one Davis Mataka from Times of Zambia to work as deputy Managing Editor.

Davis Mataka has upto now been working as ‘Politica News Editor’ at the Times of Zambia, another government newspaper.

Earlier this year, the government through the Daily Mail board refused to renew the contract of veteran broadcaster Leaonard Kantumoya who was employeed by late president Levy Mwanawasa as Managing Editor for  Daily Mail. Kantumoya was ‘poached’ from the University of Zambia where he was a lecturer.

The government this week elevated Evans Milimo to the position of Managing Editor. He has been the deputy Managing Editor.

But the workers unions at Daily Mail are not impressed with the bringing in of Mataka from Times of Zambia at the expense of more qualified and experienced senior journalists working at Daily Mail.

Mataka, runs a weekly column in the Times of Zambia every Tuesday and has of late directed his arsenal at the Catholic Church.

The unions are concerned that Mataka, a nephew of Deputy Secretary to cabinet Robert Mataka, does not have the relevant professional qualifications to hold such a high position.

It is beleived that Mataka only has a certificate in journalism from a private college in Kitwe, Mindolo Literature Centre.
