Rupiah Banda is a joke

By Dr Robert Mtonga

The elderly in Zambian society are often described, and sought after, as fountains of unfailing wisdom. They are esteemed more or less as living encyclopedias of knowledge to be consulted fruitfully, by all and sundry, when it comes to dealing with life’s conundrums that are often visited upon society.

Well that was until yesterday when a fat and succulent exception emerged out of the fleeing shadows upon the eastern plains of Chipata.

A little over two weeks ago, one Rupiah Bwezani Banda (RB), Zambia’s Fourth Republican President, re-entered the Zambian political scene from the national archives of former leaders of our erstwhile great nation and launched his much hailed proverbial triumphal entry into active politics.

He came, as it were, with a barefaced clarion call on Zambians to reject Zambia’s governing Patriotic Front Party (PF)’s pack of naked lies, promising sons and daughters of the soil manna from on high in the form of convertibles such as more money and more employment, as a moonshine idea.

He offered himself as a panacea, that would cure, in a stroke, the contagious economic and political maladies that the ruling PF had allegedly infected the great the nation with, come the January 20, 2015 Presidential poll.

He branded his candidature as that of a tough, sure-footed, unbending, hardnosed, visionary and battle- tested leader, arguing vehemently that Zambians did not have time for experiments in addressing the many economic and social challenges.

All this of course after underhandedly wrestling power from Dr. Nevers Sekwila Mumba, President of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), a party RB had come to call home ostensibly for personal aggrandisement.

Thanks to the courts of law in no small measure, the old man was stopped in his tracks just in time to save him some vestiges of decency, assuming that RB had a whiff of that virtue in the first place.

Yesterday, on the Lord’s Day 4th January 2015, RB rubbished all that his thick lips had volunteered about the PF’s misdemeanours and endorsed the Presidential Candidate of the PF with a straight wrinkled brow typical of a man acquainted with shamelessness.

To hear this man singing, to the high heavens, the praises of the PF, a party he seemingly hated with a passion of undiluted gall for unceremoniously hounding him out of power in 2011, denuding him of his immunity against prosecution, persecuting him before the courts of law on what many believed were trumped-up charges, not only defies logic, but is, pardon my bad French, utterly nauseating to put it odourlessly.

Surely the man who said wisdom comes from the east had not met RB when he coined that phrase otherwise he could have placed an appropriate proviso to cater for this special wonder of wonders.

For excelling all his age-mates as the most fickle, most unwise old man in our land on this score, RB needs a sanatorium of his own…

I ask all Zambians, with a heart for the motherland, to hide their faces from the shadow of this politically immoral old boy looking for a quick back…
