Patriotic Front President Michael Sata has asked president Rupiah Banda to dissolve parliament and call for general elections immediately.
Sata made the demand Wednesday morning at a press briefing in reaction to parliament’s failure to approve changes to the constitution.
Zambia has 158 parliamentarians and requires 106 of these MPs for any constitutional bill to go through.
But in Tuesday’s voting, the opposition MPs from the PF boycotted and left the building while MPs from UPND stayed in parliament but did not vote.
Only 93 MPs voted for the approval thereby falling short of the required 106.
PF leader Michael Sata said today that this is the first time a constitutional bill has been rejected by Zambians. He said the ruling party should therefore resign and call for fresh mandate from the people.
