President Michael Sata has declared Saturday 4th January 2014 a day of national mourning in honour of Mufulira District Commissioner Beatice Mithi who passed on New Year’s Eve.
A District Commissioner is a civil servant at the level of a director in a government department.
According to a Press release by Secretary to the Cabinet Roland Msiska, …during the period of national mourning that will run from 06:00 hours to 18:00 hours, all flags will fly at half-mast and activities of entertainment nature should be suspended or cancelled.
Msiska said Mrs Mithi will be put to rest tomorrow at Chalitulinga Cemetery in Mufulira after requiem service which will be held at the United Church of Zambia Central Congregation at 09:00 hours.
Mrs Miti who died after collapsing while attending prayers on New Year’s Eve in Mufulira was appointed District Commissioner on 24th April 2012.
She is survived by a husband and four Children.
This is the first time a civil servant and junior one for that matter is accorded a national mourning.
There is no regulation of who qualifies to be accorded such honour as Sata just decided.
In the past when State House was respected and respectful, granting of such honours were regulated.
