Senior officials in the Office of the President, special branch, are retiring to avoid being kicked out by the new government.
And President Michael Sata is said to be planning to appoint a junior officer or recycle a retired spy as Director General to replace Regis Phiri. Sata, say insiders, will bypass senior spies because none of them is from his region.
So far, directors who have retired from the time the PF won are Shadreck Mwale who was head of Internal Security and Katongo who was Head of Administration.
Those said to be eying the position of director general but stand no chance include a Mwanambale and Samuel Nkhoma current Lusaka Province Executive Director.
Reggies Phiri is reportedly retiring this month end but has been reporting religiously to State House on a daily basis.
Insiders explained that ‘for now officers holding the rank of Director, are contemplating retirement as they do not want to suffer the fate of 1993 when several senior officers were carelessly retired by the MMD government’.
Sources also said the caliber of the current crop of officers is highly questionable because the majority have little field experience and that most found themselves in senior positions due to family ties and the high death rate in the Service due to HIV/Aids which has ‘retired’ a lot of good officers.
