Shorprite workers in Kitwe strike

Shoprite  workers in Kitwe have gone on strike over the company’s failure to implement the revised minimum wage and the continued  casualisation where some workers have worked more than two years as casuals.
Some Shoprite workers told the Zambian Watch Dog in Kitwe that they have had decided to go on strike because of the company’s failure to implement the revised minimum wage and the rampant casualisation being perpetrated by the management at the company.
The  workers said, instead of giving them , the revised minimum wage, the management puts the allowances together with the basic salary to show that the salary is high when in actual fact it had just being put together with other allowances.
“These people think we are so dull and ignorant that we can’t see what they are doing. Instead of giving us the revised minimum wage, they just take other allowances and put them together with the basic salary so that we become excited that the salary has become high. No, we are not so foolish.
“Our patience should not be mistaken for being dull or ignorant. So today, we are on strike because of failure to implement the revised minimum wage and the rampant casualisation. We want these issues to be addressed,’ said the striking Shoprite workers.
