Six to compete for Kasama

Six candidates have successfully filed in nominations for the Kasama Parliamentary by-election set for October 15.

Electoral Commission of ZAMBIA-ECZ- Spokesperson Chris Akufuna confirmed this in an interview with ZNBC news in Lusaka on Thursday.

The six candidates include MMD’s Burton Mugala, Patriotic Front’s Geoffrey Mwamba, Maggie Ngona of the All Peoples Congress and Alexander Chansa of UNIP.

Chistey Ntalasha and Mohammed Hamir filed in as Independent candidates.

Mr. Akufuna described the nomination exercise as peaceful.

The Kasama seat fell vacant following the resignation of Saviour Chishimba who held the seat on the PF ticket.

Dr. Chishimba who is now leader of a new political party, the United Progressive People-UPP, resigned from the PF and Parliament, citing personal reasons.

And the MMD has called for peaceful campaigns ahead of the October 15 Kasama Central parliamentary by-election.

MMD National Chairman for Elections Mike Mulongoti says violence should not be entertained in a democratic society like Zambia.

Mr. Mulongoti, says there is need for political parties contesting the election to conduct clean campaigns so that the electorate is allowed to chose their Member of Parliament in a peaceful manner.

He has urged Kasama residents not to be used as agents of violence by selfish politicians.
