The only United Party for National Development (UPND) councillor at the Nyimba District Council has defected to the Patriotic Front, according to the PF public relations wing.
The sole UPND councillor defected to the PF at a mass rally addressed by PF leader Michael Sata on July 29, a statement written by the PF said.
The PF did not name the councilor but said he or she was accompanied by more than 100 other members of UPND, MMD and UNIP.
The statement further states that, upon hearing the defection of his only member of the council at Nyimba, UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema went into a rage and demanded that the bicycles he bought for his Nyimba campaign team be returned.
Before the rally ended Mr Sata gave the defectors new bicycles that were meant for PF mobilisation so that they can return them to Hichilema.
According to the same statement, the crowds roared with shouts of shame on Hakainde for being so petty that he had phoned the councillor and his supporters to return the bicycles he bought them as appreciation for the work they had done for him.
