Speaker of the National Assembly Amusaa Mwanamwambwa says the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) is the only institution mandated by the Zambian constitution to conduct elections and announce results.
Mwanamwambwa said in parliament Thursday that ECZ is protected by the Constitution and is therefore expected to execute its duties of managing and announcing results.
He was responding to a point of order raised by Monze MP Jack Mwiimbu who wanted to know why Minister of Information Ronnie Shikapwasha is threatening people who plan to carry out parallel vote tabulation.
“This August house enacted the Constitution and among the creatures of the Constitution is the commission, which is assigned with the powers to carry out presidential, parliamentary and Local Government elections,” He said.
But Mwanamwambwa advised MPs to debate issues of parallel vote tabulation outside because the people supporting it are doing from outside parliament.
