State House ‘rescinds’ release of Afumba Mombotwa

Barotseland freedom fighter Afumba Mombotwa has been removed from the list of five prisoners that was earlier in the day announced by State House Press Aid Isaac Chipampe as having been pardoned by President Lungu..
State House announced that President Lungu has pardoned Chief Mulongwe, former Mines Minister in the MMD government Maxwell Mwale, Journalist Derrick Sinjela, Linyungandambo leader Afumba Mombotwa and former Zambia Air Force Commander Christopher Singogo.
But late in the day, Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo announced a revised list of those pardoned with Afumba Mombotwa’s name missing from the list which now indicated four names from the five earlier announced by State House.
When asked why Afumba’s name was missing from the list, Kampyongo said the list he was announcing was the official and final list and that any other list that was circulated earlier (by State House) was not official.
There is no explanation from State House on why Afumba’s pardon has been rescinded.
There is a growing rift between government and the BRE and earlier in the day, the Barotse Royal Establishment (BRE) held a press briefing at Limulunga at which Barotseland Prime Minister (Ngambela) Mukela Manyando accused President Edgar Lungu’s government of schemes to destabilise Barotseland by fuelling and sponsoring ethnic division and tension.
