TAZARA workers down tools

Unionised workers at Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) on the Zambian side have gone on strike after going for five months without salaries.

Union officials from Kasama told the Zambian watchdog that efforts to convince management to pay them salaries have failed as government has not met its funding obligation in the Tanzania – Zambia jointly owned railway line.

And Finance minister Alexander Chikwanda failed to meet the aggrieved workers in Kapiri Mposhi on Tuesday when he went to commission Zambia revenue authority ultra modern offices and the move angered the workers because they wanted to pour their unhappiness on him.

“He is the financial controller of the government and he knows our challenges, he promised that he would come and meet us here when he comes but he changed his mind and dodged us, we have no option but to endorse the strike,” said a union representative in Kapiri Mposhi.

Last month Zambia railways workers also went on strike to demand for money that is owed to them by government.
