Teacher recruitment put on hold, due to lack of money

The much publicised countrywide recruitment of more than 5,000 teachers which was supposed to take place in August has been indefinitely put off due to lack of resources.

Last year, then education minister John Phiri announced that government will recruit 5,000 teachers as new recruitments and fill all the vacancies but sources at the ministry headquarters have disclosed that the exercise has been put off.

“We were supposed to do the recruitment in August so that by the time schools open in the third term in September the teachers will already have been posted into their new establishments but now we have been asked to hold on because the system does not allow recruiting someone until the money is there,” said the source.

And Education deputy minister Sydney Mushanga has disclosed in parliament that the government owes more than K450m to retired teachers
