The financially troubled state owned but PF controlled Times of Zambia is set to pay a huge libel compensation to former first lady Thandiwe Banda over the false story the PF paper carried alleging that she owned hotels and other stolen properties in neighboring countries Malawi and Tanzania, the Watchdog has been informed.
Mrs. Banda denied The Times of Zambia story concocted by one of the editors and she demanded for a retraction and an apology but management failed to do so.
She later instructed her lawyers to commence defamation proceedings against the paper and when the matter came for hearing, Times of Zambia failed to defend themselves and a consent judgment has since been entered in favour of the former first lady.
She was represented by lawyers Sakwiba Sikota and Prof. Patrick Mvunga.
The Watchdog understands that in the consent judgment, lawyers are expected to work out an appropriate financial settlement befitting her profile and nature of the case that demeaned her character.
