Two hippos on poachers’ trap for two weeks

Two hippos are on the verge of dying after being captured by a poacher’ snare in the Kasanka National Park in Serenje district, Central province more than two weeks ago.

According to officials of the Kasanka National Park, the only veterinarian officer who can remove the snare from the hippos is in South Africa and is only expected in Zambia after November 2, 2014.

‘This happened more than two weeks ago and these animals are suffering because not only are the snares still cutting into their flesh but they are also joined together and can only move apart for about 4 meters,’ a person close to the case told the Watchdog.

It is believed that one of the poachers was hurt by the hippos but it is not yet clear if he has been arrested.
