Unnecessary: police arrest woman, aide for aborting

Police in Lundazi have arrested a 26-year-old married woman for what they call ‘unlawfully’ terminating her five-months pregnancy.

Also arrested is a 54-year-old woman who aided the young woman in terminating the pregnancy.

Eastern Province Deputy Commissioner of Police, Sharon Zulu confirmed the arrest to ZANIS in Lundazi and identified the suspects as Susan Gondwe of Kakuro village and Roster Mwanza of Mphungu village.

Ms Zulu said the incident happened between 15th and 16th July, 2017 when Susan was allegedly given herbal medicine by Mwanza to abort the by the pregnancy.

The two were then arrested last week after a complaint to Lundazi police by Susan’s husband, Lyson Kamanga that his wife had terminated her pregnancy in unclear circumstances.

Both suspects are currently in police custody, and will appear in court soon, to face charges of abortion and procuring the process of abortion respectively.
