Unpaid Kasama farmers protest, demand for their maize

Farmers in Kasama today marched to TAZARA main shed of the FRA in a bid to repossess the maize supplied to government this year for which they have not been paid.

The irate farmers carrying placards reading ‘bring back our maize’ were intercepted by riot police at the TAZARA junction and ordered back to town, there is fear that instead of paying them the farmers may be detained by police.

Radio Mano reports that yesterday Acting provincial Permanent Secretary Boniface Mbuzi had a tough time pleading with farmers not to withdraw their maize. Mbuzi said withdrawing maize would not be ideal.

Countrywide, government has failed to pay farmers in full and the failure is feared will result into a poor harvest next year because they have no money to buy agriculture inputs.
