Hundreds of pensioners and retirees Wednesday walked from Kamwala Park to the Ministry of Local Government and Housing to present their petition over government’s delay to pay them their pensions.
Zambia Local Authorities Retirees and Pensioners Association (ZALARPA) president, Mathew Nyakalale expressed sadness at governments’ alleged negligence in paying them their terminal benefits.
“We are not politicians but a peaceful group who only want to present our petition to the President through the Ministry of Local Government and Housing. Many of our friends have died without enjoying their money,” he said.
Mr. Nyakalale explained that most council have allegedly failed to remit money deducted from workers to the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) and Local Authorities Superannuation Fund (LASF).
He recommended that the Ministry of Local Government and Housing should compel all councils to remit their workers’ pension to LASF and income deductions to ZRA
And Minister of Local Government and Housing Emerine Kabanshi pleaded with the pensioners to be patient with government while it finds a solution.
She assured the pensioners that government has their interests at heart adding that the matter will be forwarded to the President before she gets back to them.
Recently, the Ministry of Local Government and Housing promised to settle the outstanding terminal benefits owed to retirees by various councils. Terminal benefits date as far back as 1996.
