The UPND supporters and other citizens who were arrested from a gym and accused of being a militia have been released from Jail. A magistrate gave the 17 bail this afternoon
The youths who were held in different police cells around Lusaka, were taken to the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court in a police vehicle amid tight security by riot police officers.
Appearing before Lusaka Magistrates’ Court Senior Resident Magistrate Mwaka Mikalile were 19 youths including 18 males and 1 female arrested last Saturday at the premises of UPND vice President Geoffrey Mwamba along Luanshya road .
The youths who were represented by Lusaka lawyers Keith Mweemba, Gilbert Phiri and Ndala Makayi told the court that they understood the charged but denied committing any crime.
During plea the Defense lawyers argued that the offence their clients allegedly committed was a bailable and asked the court to exercise its discretionary powers to grant them bail.
The prosecution told the court that it had no objections to bail applications by the defense team as long as the accused provided reasonable sureties.
In passing ruling, Senior Resident Magistrate Mikalile granted bail to the accused stating that each accused person should provide working sureties from recognized institutions with non-cash bail of K10, 000
According to the indictment, the youths were alleged found drilling for military reasons without permission from the Republican President.
