Opposition UPND will retain ten out of nineteen Members of Parliament currently serving in the Southern province against the local people’s wishes.
According to the recommendations by the committee sent to evaluate the adoptions of candidates for this year’s elections a fortnight ago led by Charles Kakoma, ten out of 19 will re-contest their seats.
So far the committee has recommended Jack Mwiimbu for Monze central, Highvie Hamududu to re-contest in Bweengwa while Vitalis Mooya will deliver Moomba constituency to the UPND.
Emmanuel Hachipuka’s Mbabala constituency has been given to Ephraim Belemu a new entrant after Hachipuka announced that he will not re-contest his seat this year.
Cornelius Mweetwa will contest the Choma central seat after the current MP George Chazangwe received a reject.
Request Muntanga will also retain his Kalomo central at the expense of Edgah Siakachoma, a preferred candidate.
Independent Member of Parlaiment for Dundumwezi who recently joined the UPND Edgah Sing’ombe went unopposed during the adoption processes.
Chikankata area Member of Parliament Mwinju Habenzu and his counterpart for Magoye Ben Mweemba have been left out and two names in each constituency have been forwarded to the National Management Committee for adoption sometime next week.
In Namwala a Mr. Hamiyanda will replace Major Robby Chizyuka who has been adopted to re-contest on the MMD ticket.
Brian Ntundu for Gweembe, Garry Nkombo Mazabuka central, Godfrey Beene for Itezhi tezhi, Raphael Muyanda for Sinazongwe, Regina Musokotwane for Katombora and Douglas Siakalima for Siavonga have been drafted among those to be ratified for adoptions by the NMC.
However, the recommendations made by the evaluating team have gone against the wishes of the people.
A senior UPND official who attended the sitting in Choma told the Watchdog that the UPND leadership had names of candidates to force on the people.
“The constituency had made their choices but as usual some hand somewhere intervened to have people like Cornelius Mweetwa picked at the expense of Chazangwe, people in choma want someone who lives there, same with Monze central,” the official who spoke on anonymity said.
He said the trend was same with Sinazongwe, Siavonga, Katombora and Gweembe. He said although there are such problems, UPND will image victorious in the elections because the people in the province vote for the party not an individual.
