By Ernest Mwape-A Mpika resident in Northern Province has urged voters in Solwezi Central to protest against the acquittal of the former President, Frederick Chiluba by voting for an opposition candidate in the forthcoming parliamentary bye – election.
Speaking in Mpika Tuesday, Cyprian Mulenga said since MMD has banned all forms of demonstrations on the acquittal of Chiluba, the only remaining option was to deny them a vote in all future elections as nobody would be cited for treason.
The disappointed resident said from time immemorial, inhabitants had been protesting when things went wrong and he could not understand as to why Rupiah Banda government was telling them that protesting against the acquittal of Chiluba was treasonable.
Because Zambians were championing the rule of law, he added, citizens should have a right to demonstrate where they noticed a problem and added that threats from government ministers would not take the country anywhere, but putting the nation on an awkward position.
Mulenga observed that if indeed Solwezi residents were dejected with the acquittal of the former republican president, they should prove their displeasure by electing an opposition candidate in the forthcoming Parliamentary bye – election.
He noted that retaining MMD in the Solwezi central parliamentary bye – election would not only kill the rule of law, but also suppress further the freedom of expression.
“Because the MMD has no respect for the poor in the country, I am pleading with you brothers and sisters not only in Solwezi but everywhere to ensure that the wings of the ruling party are hacked by not voting for them in all future elections,” Mulenga said.
He appealed to all registered voters in Solwezi to emulate their colleagues in Kasama central who openly protested against the flamboyant MMD by giving a massive yes vote to PF/UPND pact.
