Watchdog exposure; government dubiously resumes road works

After a Zambian Watchdog exposure of the tiff between government and Asphalt Roads Zambia (ARZ) over the controversial contract to do 34 kilometers of selected urban roads in Kabwe and Kapiri Mposhi, government has entered into a deal with the contractor who has been paid some extra money and an illegal extension of the mileage at an inflated rate.

ARZ were awarded 34 kilometers but after buying equipment and paying commission to ailing Dictator Michael Sata’s son Mulenga, the company remained with no funds to execute the contract leading to project time extensions. Recently the company differed with government over payments, they threatened to abandon the project and expose government’s shoddy dealings but government has found another scandalous way of keeping the contractor.

Government has paid some more money to ARZ, the contractor has been given an additional 14 kilometres at an inflated rate to compensate for Mulenga’s unbudgeted for commission. The company has now resumed works but for how long, only yet to be seen. Zambian Watchdog reporters on a fact finding mission to Kabwe found works on a stretch of 100 metres on Buntungwa road.

Road development Agency (RDA), which has always been under the ministry of works has now been shifted to state house by Sata under his direct supervision, as such all silly works taking place all over the country start and end with Sata in good health and in sickness.
