We are still hunting for Mmembe-police

Police have not yet arrested Post Newspaper owner-editor Fred Mmembe following a bench warrant issued against him.

Lusaka Division Police commanding officer Greenwell Ng’uni says police received the warrant late evenning yesterday.

He said he will soon assemble a team of police officers to hunt for the Post newspaper boss.

Lusak Chief Resident Magistrate Charles Kafunda  ordered the arrest of TM’membe for disobeying summons to appear before court.

“The said Fred M’membe is fully aware that he has been summoned for contempt of court and this court is not satisfied with reasons given on his non-attendance of court on a very serious summons of contempt. I will therefore issue a bench warrant for his arrest,” Mr Kafunda said.

He said the warrant is returnable on Monday September 7, 2009. This means that if Mr M’membe is arrested, he will be in custody until Monday when he appears in court.

There is only one editor-in-chief summoned and the person, as the court has learnt, is Fred M’membe who is aware of the proceedings by having been duly summoned in his capacity as editor-in-chief,” he said.
