Mr Mwila complained about the poor performance of Zambian contractors, who normally fail to do a good job and complete their contractual works in the province.
The minister was speaking in Mansa on Wednesday when Deputy Minister of Communication, Transport, Works and Supply Mutaba Mwali called on him at his office.
He said Zambian contractors in the province are a disappointment because of their failure to complete contractual jobs on time and that their works are usually shoddy.
In an apparent reference to Mwasika Contractors, who are constructing the multi-billion Kwacha Mwense and Milenge district hospitals, the minister described the quality of work by the contractor on the two projects as below standard.
Mr Mwila said most Chinese contractors do a better job on most projects contracted to them.
He warned that local contractors should not complain if Government starts giving preference to the Chinese.
“I wish to register my disappointment over the Zambian contractors in Luapula Province, who have not been doing a good job, compared with the Chinese. They should not complain if Government starts giving contracts to the Chinese,” Mr Mwila said.
And Dr Mwali, who is in charge of buildings, roads and government equipment in the ministry, was in the company of experts from the Road Development Agency and the Ministry of Communication, Transport, Works and Supply to check on progress of the ongoing road contracts, including the eight road schemes awaiting feasibility studies.
During the meeting, department of buildings architect Ntasuwilwa Siwale told Mr Mwila that the ministry has observed a trend where local contractors fail to complete projects awarded to them by Government.
Mr Siwale said the buildings department has now taken steps to evaluate the work of various contractors that have not completed projects on schedule. – ZANIS
